How do you measure river flow?

We have monitoring stations across England that measure flow directly or derive flow from continuous measurement of river level.  Most of the measurements are taken electronically by sensors in the river, stored on site and then automatically sent back to us via our telemetry systems to databases used by our forecasting systems.
